Finding Solace

Words are but symbols until the author breathes life into them. Every birthday, Ruby dedicates a heartfelt remembrance card to her deceased grandma through the “Cards for Life Campaign”. When her grandfather passed away in October 2022, it made this year’s remembrance card especially significant.

“No one knows when their time will come. Although my grandparents are gone, the Tree of Life is a way for me to send blessings to them,” said Ruby. “This year, I wish to let them know that they are both missed and loved dearly.”

When Ruby’s grandmother fell critically ill in October 2020, she was arranged to be admitted to the Jockey Club Home for Hospice where she lived out her final days comfortably and surrounded by family. “Sometimes I’d like to think her presence is still at the hospice, especially during Christmas time. That way, she and grandpa can sit under the Tree of Life and read my remembrance card together.”

For Ruby, this annual ritual goes beyond the simple act of writing a card. “My grandparents are no longer with me but despite the distance, I still feel like I can love them. Remembrance cards are my way of finding solace.”
